For visitors, a Danish Christmas market is an easy way to combine sightseeing with local food, traditional crafts and Christmas shopping. Expect hot gløgg - Danish mulled wine - freshly made æbleskiver, the small round pancakes traditionally served at Christmas, as well as roasted almonds, handmade decorations, ceramics, jewellery and plenty of gift ideas.
Christmas the Danish way
Danish Christmas markets range from small local gatherings to large events with more than a hundred stalls. Some take place inside historic castles and manor houses, while others fill old town squares, museums and entire neighbourhoods with lights, greenery and festive decorations.
Food is part of the experience. Alongside gløgg and æbleskiver, you may come across Christmas cakes, chocolates, sweets, local specialities and seasonal treats. Many markets also offer live music, workshops and activities for children.
The weather may be cold, wet or windy - occasionally all three in the same afternoon - but that has never stopped the Danes from going out in search of Christmas spirit. A second cup of gløgg usually helps.
Christmas markets in Denmark 2026
Christmas at Gavnø Castle - Næstved, 6-8 and 13-15 November 2026
Gavnø Castle opens the Christmas season with one of Denmark's largest festive markets. The historic estate is filled with stalls selling handmade Christmas decorations, crafts, delicacies, wine, sweets and gifts.
The castle itself is decorated for Christmas, while live music, seasonal food and activities for children add to the atmosphere. In 2026, Christmas at Gavnø celebrates its 20th anniversary - proof that Danes take both castles and Christmas markets rather seriously.
Egeskov Christmas Market - Funen, 7-8, 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 November and 5-6 December 2026
Egeskov Castle hosts its Christmas market over five weekends in 2026. Around 110 stalls offer crafts, Christmas decorations, delicacies and gift ideas.
Much of the market takes place indoors in the estate's historic exhibition buildings, while outside there are Christmas trees, fire pits, food stalls and plenty of winter atmosphere around the castle grounds. Being indoors is not an insignificant detail during a Danish November.
Christmas at FÆNGSLET - Horsens, 13-15 and 20-22 November 2026
A former state prison may not sound like the most obvious setting for Christmas, but FÆNGSLET in Horsens transforms its raw historic buildings into one of Denmark's largest Christmas markets.
More than 200 stalls offer decorations, crafts, design and homemade specialities. Food stalls, entertainment and activities for children complete the experience. The contrast between old prison walls and Christmas lights gives this market a character entirely its own - festive incarceration, without the paperwork.
Christmas Market at Haughus Manor - Jelling, 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29 November 2026
Haughus Manor near Jelling hosts its Christmas market over three weekends in November. The estate is known for an unusual mix of Christmas stalls, vintage finds, second-hand treasures and decorative items.
It is an appealing stop for visitors who enjoy Christmas shopping with a touch of nostalgia - and the possibility of finding something rather different from the usual Christmas gifts.
Christmas at Voergaard Castle - Dronninglund, 27-29 November and 4-6 December 2026
Voergaard Castle is lavishly decorated for Christmas and opens its historic rooms and grounds to visitors during six market days.
Stalls offer crafts, gifts, delicacies and decorations, while visitors can explore the castle's impressive interiors along the way. Seasonal food, gløgg and æbleskiver complete a very Danish Christmas outing. The surroundings are grand enough to make even an ambitious Christmas tree look modest.
Christmas Market at Koldinghus - Kolding, 4-6 December 2026
The historic royal castle of Koldinghus provides a dramatic setting for a traditional Christmas market. Stalls fill the courtyard and historic halls with handmade gifts, jewellery, Christmas decorations, clothing, delicacies and other seasonal products.
Christmas music and creative activities for both children and adults add to the festive atmosphere. It is hard to imagine a more dignified setting for buying a knitted hat.
Christmas at Kronborg Castle - Helsingør, 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20 December 2026
Kronborg Castle - known around the world as Hamlet's castle - hosts three weekends of Christmas celebrations in December.
Visitors can browse Christmas stalls, enjoy seasonal food, listen to live music and take part in family activities inside one of Denmark's most impressive Renaissance castles. It is a rare opportunity to combine Christmas shopping with a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and considerably less tragedy than Hamlet.
More Christmas markets will be added
Denmark's Christmas market calendar for 2026 is still growing, and many smaller markets, town events and regional Christmas fairs are announced later in the year.
KvindeGuiden updates this guide as new dates are confirmed, so check back before planning your Christmas trip to Denmark.
